Connecting Research to

Results

MCA Ag Group acknowledges the lack of research capacity in the Northern grain-growing region. This recognition has driven the commencement of our own agricultural research initiative, with a focus on industry-relevant applied agronomic studies in the Northern NSW and Southern QLD regions.

MCA is committed to delivering both private and public research that will benefit our internal consultants and clients, as well as extending the findings of our public research to industry professionals and growers, thereby contributing to the advancement of agricultural knowledge and practice.

Public Ag Research Projects

MCA Ag Group is actively engaged in multiple public research initiatives, collaborating closely with the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) to address pressing agronomic issues identified by local National Grower Network groups. These projects encompass various critical areas, including:

  • Sorghum Project

Increased sorghum yield and reliability in Southwest QLD through optimising crop establishment and fertiliser strategy.

This three-year funded project will conduct and report on a series of trials to demonstrate how to increase yield in dryland sorghum crops through the utilisation of downforce technology, +/- strip tillage and optimum nutrient placement.

  • SE QLD Weeds Project

Developing control strategies for key problem weeds in Southeast QLD.

This two-year funded project will develop strategies to help growers in the Southern QLD sub-region to manage regionally specific priority weeds more effectively.

  • SW QLD Weeds Project

Developing control strategies for key problem weeds in Southwest QLD.

This two-year funded project will develop strategies to help growers in the Southern QLD sub-region to manage regionally specific priority weeds more effectively.

Private Ag Research Projects

Although in the early stages of development, MCA is also focusing on several private agronomic research initiatives. At the time of writing, these include:

  • Wheat Phenology Project
This project aims to understand the relative maturity of commercial wheat varieties in northern New South Wales and southern Queensland. It involves the cultivation of 20 commercial wheat varieties, planted at four different sowing times across four northern grain-growing regions: Dulacca, Pampas, Lundavra, and Coppa Creek.

  • Pigeon Peas Project
The goal of this project is to identify new pigeon pea lines that are better suited for grain production, characterised by shorter plant height, a narrower flowering window, and increased yield.

  • Annual Ryegrass Project
This project addresses the issue of annual ryegrass as an emerging concern in the northern grain-growing regions.
  • How can I access the results of MCA's research projects?

Results from MCA's public research projects will be made available to everyone and can be accessed via the 'Resources'  section of our website.

Findings from private agricultural research projects are exclusive to MCA Clients and will be made available to them upon completion.

  • How can growers and industry professionals benefit from MCA's research projects?

Growers and industry professionals benefit from MCA Ag Group’s research through access to practical trial results, agronomic insights, and innovative strategies tailored to the specific conditions of Northern NSW and Southern QLD. Our public research findings are shared openly to help improve productivity and decision-making across the industry. Additionally, the outcomes of our private research projects are used to inform best practices and provide our clients with a competitive edge in managing crops and emerging agronomic challenges.
